Male Fertility Test

When a couple is attempting unsuccessfully to conceive the problem is often associated with female fertility, however a male fertility test can be equally important in determining why a couple is having trouble conceiving.

There are several different ways a male fertility test can be performed. These tests range from a home sperm test, to a complex test done by infertility specialists. Usually the first male fertility test involves using an over the counter male fertility test or providing a sperm sample for your chosen male infertility clinic.

Testing of the male partner is normally done first because it is easier to obtain a sperm sample than it is to extract an egg from a woman and conduct a female infertility test.

If the male has recently had a vasectomy reversal a semen analysis is recommended as insurance in case the vasectomy reversal has affected the sperm quality.

Sperm quality is one of the factors used by physicians to help determine male infertility. There are many reasons why a man may be infertile and listed below are several examples of a male fertility test that are conducted by infertility specialists.

Sperm agglutination

A male fertility test which examines sperm to determine whether the sperm are clumping together. Agglutination may be head-to-head, head-to-tail, or tail-to-tail. Clumping prevents sperm from swimming through the cervical mucus.

Hemizona assay

The hemizona assay is a male fertility test of the ability of sperm to penetrate into a human egg, first the egg is split in half, then one half is tested against the husband's sperm and the other half against sperm from a fertile man.

Acrosome reaction

A membrane-bound compatment at the tip of the head of a sperm which contains lytic enzymes (hyaluronidase in mammalian sperm) which digest the outer surface of the egg and allow the sperm to inject its haploid DNA which is necessary to dissolve an egg's tough outer shell.

Testicular biopsy

The removal of a fragment of a testicle for examination under the microscope.

Vasography

An X-ray study of the vas deferens. This can determine if there is leaking or a blockage of semen.

Ultrasonography

A male fertility test in which high-frequency sound waves are bounced off internal organs and the echo pattern is converted into a 2 dimensional picture of the structures beneath the transducer. This procedure is used to locate problems with human male fertility.
